Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Award 2024-25
We are very proud to announce that St John’s has been awarded the Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Award for 2024-25. This international accreditation is awarded to the school for the Eco Team’s work last year in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness amongst their peers and the school community. For more information on the Award please click here.
The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2023-24, more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England. https://www.eco-schools.org.uk/
To gain the award, last year’s Worrall Road Eco Committee carried out an environmental review of the school and created an action plan which focussed on 3 key environmental issues: School Grounds, Litter and Energy.
Activities during the year included saving energy, recycling pens, glue sticks, paper, cardboard, hard plastic, reusing fruit snack waste (as food for the pigs of one of our members of staff), reusing raw kitchen food waste in the school garden composting, litter picking, expanding our No Dig Garden (with a new class seating area, 3 raised beds, a willow arch, raspberry canes, bird boxes and bug hotels), planting in a new wildflower meadow, starting Nature Nurtury sessions for all children to join in gardening activities in the garden, leading service on Earth Day, collaborating with other Bristol schools on trips as part of the Avon Schools Eco Network and finally, creating a new St John’s Eco Code (see picture).
The Green Flag Award was announced and presented to the Worrall Road Eco Team on Tuesday this week during service.
The Eco Team activities at both sites last year helped to increase environmental awareness, bolster our school’s sustainability, and make meaningful contributions to global conservation efforts.
